From time to time the city life gets to any of the millions of transplants who come streaming in from the countryside. When there isn't the time to take off or the means to go away, we have to play a game of Mind Over Matter. In Minnesota we would take drives past the endless fields of corn or alfalfa and trick ourselves into believing we were rolling past the green fields of Ireland.
In Brooklyn, there isn't that sort of vegetation to help the imagination so you have to try a little harder. However it is possible to believe you're in Italy if you direct your step past houses blaring old Italian music from open windows, or if you float by the pastry shops making canollis and rainbow cookies. Even Regina Pacis church looks like it's been ripped up from Italy and planted right on the corner of 66th street and 12th avenue...and with the bells tolling in the distance, the illusion is almost complete.
One can almost believe they're in San Francisco while walking under the Verrazano bridge. Summer in Central Park, you can believe you're walking through a state fair. Again...Little Italy=Actual Italy. Battery Park is like walking along the Seine, especially at dusk-so Jess says.
Where do you take your imaginary trips?
