Ernesto is rounding the tip of Florida now. It doesn't look so bad. However,I think it's funny that we name tropical storms and Hurricanes. In my mind it's equivalent to naming a tree "Bob" or a rock "Ferdinand". It seems so silly. These are inanimate things that don't deserve human names.
Planets were given ancient names- but that doesn't tweak me as much. You don't see too many Neptunes walking the halls of schools today- nor Jupiters or Saturns pulling up to an ATM to deposit their pay check. Yet there are people currently living with the names of the 2006 Atlantic Tropical Storms :
Alberto, Beryl, Chris, Debby, Ernesto, Florence, Gordon, Helene, Isaac, Joyce, Kirk, Leslie, Michael, Nadine, Oscar, Patty, Rafael, Sandy, Tony, Valerie, William
And there's more for the Eastern Pacific storms. The next storm on that side of the Americas will be "John". It's just so odd to me.
OK, sorry for this ranting, it was just something to stir the controversy...if you really care about the naming of inanimate things. On the otherside of the issue, is the order that it testifies to. That humans can not deal with disorder. And that's why we label, we name, we catergorize. It's another testimony that we were made in the image of the God of order and peace.
