Last year, in January, I helped organize a Sales Conference and one of our speakers spoke to us about obtaining the "Unfair Advantage" on sales calls. One aspect of his lesson was what he called Non-Verbal Mirroring. Basically it highlighted how our body posture/language should indicate a rapport with whomever we're speaking . A person will subconsciously respond favorably to us and our pitch if we cross our legs if they cross their legs, fold our hands in front of us if they do, tilt our head if they do, etc. Of course this is done naturally when we know, like, and are comfortable with who we're talking to, but if we don't have that bond yet, we can use this tactic to help get to that point.
Repeating what a person says or mimicking what they do can be endearing. It's like saying, "Hey I get you. I do/say that too. We're on the same page. I'm not so different from you." Though if done too much it can become annoying. Example: You know the catchphrase from Starsky & Hutch "Do It"? Try saying that in a group of people who know the movie and see how many people will repeat it back to you. They know it...they get the joke. So they establish that connection but done too often it might cause involuntary slapping.
So remember, repitition is not only for emphasis, it builds relationships. Ha!
In closing I'll leave you a joke... three men in a boat, Pete, Pete, and Repeat. Pete & Pete fall out of the boat, who's left... etc etc. It's funny at first, then it becomes ludicrous . Point made.
