Late Morning Lullaby

Don't you find it kind of thrilling when you wake up with a song in your head and you hum it on your way to getting ready, sing it in the shower and then you turn on your radio and there it is! Singing right back at you. Late Morning Lullaby by Brandi Carlile... that's what I think of.

This happens every single morning to me. A song will be playing in my head as I awake. It's as if my brain has tuned in to my favorite radio station...where they play the greatest hits of all time all day long and no one else hears it. Just me.

I wonder why it is we get a song "stuck" in our head. Very rarely do we wake up with a phrase that we repeat over and over again during the day- like we may be thinking as we awake, "I do not like green eggs and ham I do not like them Sam I am" But do we go about the rest of the day quoting that over and over-of course not! Why is it that tunes stay with us and at any random moment- when nothing else is necessarily filling our mind-we hum, we sing, we "la-la-la"?

Perhaps scientists will find the answer one day. Perhaps they will also figure out the earth is round, horse manure does NOT cure a common cold, and in fact you can speak to someone across the world through a wire. Perhaps some day.
