Before we start, I'd like to give a large and hardy thanks to our Co-Pilot Courtney for yesterday's post!! THANKS!! I look forward to more Courtney-esque discussions on Caught in a Thought.
Sunday we all discussed some of the reasons those in the world may lack the ability to reflect Jehovah's glory, really why they would shrink back from any light from Jehovah. One aspect had to do with the traditions of men, such as the kind that the Pharisees and scribes loaded upon the Jewish people at the time. But a very good question was asked : are all traditions bad?
Well of course not-especially when there is a scriptural basis for traditions and they keep in harmony with the principles held in the Bible. For instance as Jehovah's Witnesses we traditionally celebrate the Memorial. And that has valid scriptural backing.
As individuals, as families, as friends we also follow harmless traditions in our everyday life. When I was growing up, it became a sort of tradition whenever my dad had a business trip away, Mom would reserve a night to let us watch a movie with a picnic dinner in the living room. I remember that being so much fun! I always looked forward to it! It was also a tradition that all the Labrucherie children would help their Labrucherie parents with gardening and yard work on the weekends. While at the time I remember all of us dragging our feet doing it, we always ended up learning something from it and loving it.
Now as an individual I have a daily tradition of drinking tea or coffee from my yellow starbucks cup. And I always stop to have a breakfast break around 11 am. Jess has the tradition of turning on the morning news as she is getting ready. I think usually it's the Today show-I'm not 100% sure since I flinch at the TV so early in the morning (yet can handle staring at a computer screen at 7am-go figure). She also, traditionally speaking, makes the dinners in our household. I, traditionally speaking, do the cleaning in the household. And the meetings and service are also a family tradition...maybe a cultural one? Could you classify growing up as one of Jehovah's Witnesses a cultural background? Hmmm things to ponder....
As friends, I guess there are some traditions we carry on... like girly movies after service; walks along the shore, the promenade, or on the Brooklyn Bridge; trips together...I dunno. This is where I'm stretching things. TRAAAAAAAAAA-DITION!!!
But what traditions do/did you have?
