MERMAID AVENUE:

This here(hear?) is some snippets from the Billy Bragg/Wilco album, Mermaid Avenue.

The brief history of this album :

  • This is a compilation of songs written by Woody Guthrie. During his lifetime Woody wrote hundreds of songs, Nonsense songs for his kids like Hoodoo Voodoo, visions of his own Oklahoma childhood like Way over yonder in the minor key, mid-century love songs like Hesitating Beauty and work of personal self-exploration like Another Man's Done Gone that make him prime candidate as the first in a long line of singer songwriters.
  • However even after his recording career was over, he continued to write songs. When he died in 1967, many hundreds of the tunes he had carried with him in his head were lost forever.
  • Woody's daughter, Nora, approached Billy Bragg in 1995, to set about the task of putting all the songs he had written to music.
  • Mermaid Avenue is the name of the street in Coney Island, Brooklyn, that was home to Woody Guthrie and his wife, Marjorie and their kids in the years that followed World War II. And here he wrote songs.

So enjoy a few songs with Billy Bragg's Commentary:

  1. I Was Born
  2. My Flying Saucer
  3. Black Wind Blowing
  4. Another Man Done Gone
  5. I Guess I Planted
