The Moments We Live For

Sunday I took a train into the city and got off at West 110th Street, at the North East end of Central Park. After sometime had passed and I was about 1/3 of the way through the park I found a little quiet spot. Upon a rock situated on the edge of a stream I sat contemplating the glory of Jehovah's amazing creation. The gentle fall of water rang in my left ear, while my right ear was distracted by a rusting in the leaves. All I could hear was a rhythmic scuffle among the fallen cloak. I strained my eyes to find the origin of the disturbance, when suddenly I caught sight of the perpetrator. It was a blackbird, no bigger than a crow, walking about the ground cover, conducting a close inspection that flying would not suffice. He systematically tossed beak-fulls of leaves in the air around his tiny head, sifting through to find an afternoon snack. It was, afterall, tea time. I had come equipped with M&M's.

But it seemed the delightful quiet and beauty of the moment would last but a minute for some obnoxious kids wanted to jump the stream. The two boys could only begin their attempt for the girl they had brought along was overcome with fear for their lives and screamed, "NO!! OH MY GOD!!DON'T DO IT!" Yes the moment was officially over.

So too, it seemed, for my blackbird friend, as I only caught sight of his tail feathers as a sparrow chased him away, squeaking noisily.

At last all loud disturbances fled, leaving the simple, cheerful whistles in the branches above me. I went back to my meditation.

Tell about your savored moments.
