West Virginia Unassigned Territory was an experience unlike any other I've had before. The territory was ripe...RIPE!! So many hungry people, who love to talk about the Bible and God. Just goes to show why this world is allowed to continue a little longer. There were so many that need the truth out there! So many from our group have returned home with a renewed sense of zeal and are highly motivated to reach their spiritual goals. Or in some cases, this trip was good for forming and setting goals for those of us who might've been floundering a bit...trying to find the right direction to take.
However aside from the ministry this was my favorite un-service West Virginia experience:
It was Sunday afternoon, a group of us had just gone to seen a movie at the local theatre(the best part about this was that the movie+popcorn+a soda was LESS than a NY movie ticket ALONE!!!Here it's $8 or more depending on the theatre). The next line of order, after the movie, was dodgeball. So we bought a large smiley faced ball at Walmart and two cars filled with a total of 13 squished people drove to the local High School and we played dodgeball on the front lawn of the school.
There was a brief water balloon fight which seemed pretty pointless as most just bounced off of people and splashed on the ground and besides it had started to rain...but it was nice to throw things anyway.
After that some were piling back into the cars, when the suggestion was made that some of us should just walk back to the Inn. So Brandon(who we affectionately call "Chuck"), Becca, Joe and I walked back. It was beautiful actually,we lit sparklers as we walked, stopped on a bridge and looked over at the fog-covered river, and watched the countless black bats fly franticly above us.
And what's a walk without a good snack?! I ASK YOU!!! SO we went to Wendy's and Joe bought us all frosties that we ate as we walked the last leg to the Inn. It was good that we were close for it was starting to rain with lightening and thunder .As we passed a certain spot on the side of the Inn we saw a way up to the roof, so we planned to go up to the roof and watch the lightening(I know it was a well-thought-out and BRILLIANT plan...go to the highest spot possible during an electrical storm!!) And we did, we met on the roof. It was POURING rain but it was a warm rain and each time the lightening struck in the clouds above, it would light up the entire area and we could see the silhouettes of the mountains all around us. How the mountains surrounded us reminded me of what Elisha's attendant must've seen when he looked up at the mountainous regions all around him and saw them filled with angels on war chariots and horses, ready to fight in their behalf. We talked about goals, about going to where the need is great (like WV), about Jehovah's awesome power....it was a moment for the books!
A little more than an hour passed and the night air started to chill our soaked clothes so we returned inside, got dry clothes and went down to the conference room of the hotel and played Taboo till midnight with the rest of the crew( who were at dinner while we were on the roof).
And now we're back to the ordinary life, but it seems to have more flavor in it after those experiences...
